Style Study 01 : Finding Nemo

Lately I have been feeling rather sulky about my cruddy style and bad art that I've been neglecting, so I decided to start studying some of my favorite styles from my favorite movies and shows. First on my list was Finding Nemo, because the faces and expressions are incredible. It is interesting to work with limited body language, and body language and expressions that change with the specific character and species, as opposed to humans, who have the same body parts that work in the same basic way.

When I decide that I am "Done" with a style, is when I can draw most, if not all, of the main characters accurately without reference.
As you can see, I've pretty much gotten Crush, Tad, Pearl, and Nemo (mostly)down. Dory is almost there.

Marlin... however...

Finding Inner Peace

Photo_457CD811-51E5-5B32-F1E9-C83D92FE35AD.jpg
This is my painting. It looks much better in person, just to inform you of that matter. I had but the slightest clue as to what this painting would be, and after I had painted it, it made me think of Horton Hears A Who. But then, as I further analyzed what I created, the blue... sun? in the center, seemed calm to me against the chaotic and colorful jungle surrounding it, and then I immediately thought that my Little Blue Elephant, was searching for a part of himself, finding the center calm of spirituality deep within the crazy and hectic and infuriating and beautiful madness. Could you possibly think of us, looking at this painting? I do. I think that it represents the chaos that we are submerged in and thrust into in our modern world, most of us are searching for something that is a hidden part of us, whether it being a part of our identity or searching for spiritual contentment. It's a shame, really, the fact of how much chaos there is. Visual, sound... It's sad, how most people rush from one thing to the next, it's just I mad race to get to the end of the day. So I leave you for now, with one last thought,  slow down, enjoy the little things, and stop and smell the roses, things go by fast enough as it is, without our prodding them along.

Candy Cane Orb

Drawing these, I don't know what, is always fun for me as I never know what they will end up looking like until the are done! I like this one. Due to the coloring it sometimes reminds me of the festive holidays (candy canes), and other times it makes me think of shells, due to some structures within my... orb, and if you look at it from a distance it looks like some sort of flower. The first time I drew these, whatever they are called, was at camp. On my hands. Bad, Monet, bad. No drawing on yourself.

Just a barn.

Photo_1D1CC7EE-C99D-122B-4174-E2FF164C393D.jpg

This is a sketch of a barn. A plain, boring, barn. Often overlooked and seen as a flaw in the beautiful green landscape. The barn, is a blimp, a rundown stack of dulled red pieces of wood. No one cares about this barn.

But what if it isn't just a boring rundown barn? What if this was The Barn that had the cows that gave the best milk for ten years running in the local fair? Can you see a young brother and a sister swinging on a tire? Laughing and rolling in a pile of hay? And what about now, the prsent? Can you imagine small creatures of a child's dream hiding in the safety of this dark barn? Living happily in the shadows? Or, what if this barn belongs to an old widower who can't keep up with the work? Who's children can't help, can no longer roll in the hay because they have children and jobs of their own? Maybe, hopefully, the barn's story isn't sad like that. Or, maybe, the barn, is just, retired. Happy to be at peace, being hugged and taken in by the surrounding landscape. But who am I kidding? It's just a barn.

I sketched this on a paper garbage bag. It's a great way to recycle and be green. Also, colors look a lot brighter, especially white. If you have oil pastels, or chalk, you should try experimenting  by drawing on the paper that helped you bring your groceries in.

Blue

Blue sipped her black coffee quietly, almost reverently, as she dazed off into the beautiful, albeit old, abandoned building that was juxtaposed between two pretty, but standard, buildings, her mind began to wonder. As she gazed at the walls, the shattered glass, the ripped curtains, a new vision came to life in her mind. Beautiful jazz pouring out of all windows, the dusky lights illuminating the floor. People were dancing, gorgeous gowns and elaborate masks studded with diamonds and precious jewels reflected, and shattered the flawless creamy walls with studs of light. The couples waltzed and swirled, the atmosphere was light... yet heavy. After imagining the lovely spectacle this building once was, her mind began to wander again... what stories had happened in there? What tales to be told? What enchanting love stories and scandals, what buisness, what backstories were engraved into the walls?

Blue conjured up two children in her minds eye... two dirty, scuffed up kids, standing outside, admiring the lights. They were holding hands and wondering... what were they wondering?

BZZZ BZZZ bzz bzz bz bz bz bzzzzzzz......

In a daze, Blue looked down at her watch, now alarming and a frequent rate. 10:00? That couldn't be right... It was 9 just a moment ago!

She stood up in a flurry... and left. If she had cared to look back, cardboard coffee cup standing alone on the table...

Two young kids, scuffed and dirty, picked up the cup.

"Let's pretend...."

The Winged Battle

The Winged Battle

In a time and place nothing  but far,
there once lived a lonely Star.
From the sky she would gaze,
Upon every worldly phase.
From the battling Lions,
To the ancient Mayans.

There once was a time when the Lions were a ruling race,
Pride and power marked upon their face.
They once had wings upon their spines,
And flew well beyond mighty pines.
Star got to see this Nation majestically rule,
And saw it fall with one epic duel.

When the Lions roared the skies would tumble,
And in their wake mountains would crumble.
For centuries the Lions kept order in the lands and skies,
Because of the Lions, the kingdoms received peace and prosperity as their prize,
But slowly a new and  selfish race began to rise.

The humans were this dangerous race,
That would take the Lion's rightful place.
Lions had courage and strength,
But humans had intelligence to an extended length.
Star watched as the Humans opposed their rulers,
And as everyone became legendary duelers.
The Lions fought and fought,
Until the clever Humans had them caught.
The Humans won with all of their flesh and bone.
They took the lion's wings and those who fought were turned to stone,
Their beautiful wings rarely ever shown.

Star watched the most tragic tale from above,
Learning to see past all the hate and saw the Humans love.
The Lions lost in grace,
And will always have pride upon the face.

THE END

The Queen Of Hearts

"'Would you tell me, please,' said Alice, a little timidly, 'why you are painting those roses?'
Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two. Two began in a low voice, 'Why the fact is, you see, miss, this here ought to have been a red rose tree, and we put a white one in by mistake, and if the Queen was to find it out we should all have our heads cut off, you know. So you see, miss, we're doing our best, afore she comes, to-' At this moment Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out, 'The Queen! The Queen!' and the three gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon their faces. There was a sound of many footsteps, and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen."
